The Bay to Park Paseo creates a dynamic walking experience connecting the San Diego Bayfront and Balboa Park along a key downtown corridor.

Welcome to the Bay to Park Paseo, a recently-unveiled 1.7-mile walking experience along Park Boulevard through downtown from San Diego Bay to Balboa Park. The goal to connect two of San Diego’s iconic gems has been around for more than 100 years. We finally did it!

The project is led by volunteer designers, artists, and storytellers who are creating a unique, engaging, and impermanent pedestrian experience.

Presented by Pete Garcia and Beth Callender of the non-profit URBAN INTERVENTIONS and Chloé Lauer, Urban Planner, the Bay to Park Paseo is fiscally sponsored by the San Diego Public Spaces Foundation.

Why now?

Linking the Bayfront with Balboa Park was first suggested by notable urban planner John Nolen to the City of San Diego in 1908 and has been an unfulfilled dream of many in the design community

Today Park Boulevard offers a direct route (1.7 miles) and passes many of the city’s beloved places including the award-winning Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge, Petco Park, the Central Library, and many educational institutions, including UC San Diego Park & Market, New School of Architecture & Design, San Diego City College, and several K-12 schools.

Now is the ideal time to realize this important project and showcase the power of design. The Bay to Park Paseo has been endorsed as part of World Design Capital 2024.

A Unique San Diego Legacy

The goal is for the Bay to Park Paseo to begin a unique Legacy Event: The San Diego Paseos Biennale. Every two years different teams of designers and artists may create a different paseo project, eventually weaving the city together in a tapestry of pedestrian experiences.
